Who We Arequeeryouthimage

The Washington County Gay Straight Alliance, Inc. is a 501 (C) (3) Organization that facilitates and provides resources for a peer group of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Transsexual, Questioning, Queer, Asexual, and Allied (LGBTQA) youth. The organization also hosts  2nd Friday Nights Potluck, a monthly social gathering for the LGBTQA community of all ages.  It is an unfortunate reality that in small towns and rural areas like Washington County there are not as many social opportunities or healthy lifestyle resources available to our youth and the LGBTQA population in general. The WCGSA provides some of these opportunities and is evolving to meet the growing need to do more.

Happy New Year! Exciting things are happening in 2017 with the WCGSA!

Best wishes for a safe, healthy and happy 2017!  May you find comfort in friends, family, and chosen family as the days open up before you.  There’s a lot of negativity in our world and in our communities.  Moving forward we need, more than ever, to stick together and find common ground on which to gather, nurture one another, and find the support we need to get through some trying times.  Never be afraid to ask for help from us at the WCGSA.  If we cannot help directly, we will make every attempt to connect you with someone who can.  Our Mission Statement reflects so much of what we stand for but, if you know us, it is more than words.  (Please read our Mission Statement below)

We were asked recently to provide a definition of the word Ally for educational purposes.  This definition comes close to what we feel represents an Ally, but again, there are many layers involved in being such a person:

A straight ally or heterosexual ally is a heterosexual and cisgender person who supports equal civil rights, gender equality, LGBT social movements, and challenges homophobia, biphobia and transphobia. A straight ally believes that LGBT people face discrimination and can be socially and economically disadvantaged. They aim to use their position as heterosexual or cisgender individuals in a society focused on heteronormativity to fight homophobia, biphobia and transphobia.

So, as you can see there is room at our table for so many that have an open heart and follow us in“Embracing Diversity, Promoting Equality.”

We are Moving!

We have found a home in a new, welcoming community center recently built in the City of Washington.  The CENTER on Strawberry, 59 E. Strawberry Alley (Avenue on GPS), is nearly complete.  We will have use of much of this 5,200 sq. ft., space, fully accommodating of all levels of ability, centrally located in Washington near our supportive friends of First Presbyterian Church, 1793.  If you are used to attending our 2nd Friday Nights Potluck you need only turn right on toStrawberry Alley instead of left into the church parking lot to find us.  The building is located between Main Street and College Street.  We are close to on-street parking, the Citizen’s Library parking lot, and the Main Street public parking lots.  We have one designated handicapped parking space along with four spaces directly in front of the building.

To our delight, we are also announcing that The Persad Center will be joining The CENTER on Strawberry beginning Feb.1 with the leasing of office space in a private wing of the building.  Stay tuned for more information from The Persad Center about this wonderful collaboration for the health and well-being of our community.

Please see check out Upcoming Events on this website for information about our 2nd Friday Nights Potluck with will transition this month to our new space and our upcoming Grand Opening Event!
